“There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.”
– Sophia Loren –
My mother is 71 and I recently turned 50.
We were reflecting on how 49 and 69 sound so much younger than 50 and 70.
But then we decided to change our attitude. It’s an imaginary difference and only matters if we let it.
The wrong attitude reminds me of how circus elephants are shackled.
“When young, circus elephants are attached by heavy chains to large stakes driven deep into the ground. They pull and yank and strain and struggle, but the chain is too strong, the stake too rooted. One day they give up, having learned that they cannot pull free, and from that day forward they can be “chained” with a slender rope. Because it believes it cannot, it cannot.”
– Gavin de Becker –
I like that last line from the quote:
“Because it believes it cannot, it cannot.”
The same goes for age. if you believe you’re too old, then you’re too old.
I see it all the time, an imaginary barrier of what is possible. People believe that they are too old to speak Spanish.
That’s not the case. Traditional methods don’t work for teenagers either.
No tiene que ver con la edad (age has nothing to do with it).
Most teens study a foreign language in school. Good luck finding a teenager from those classes who can converse in a foreign language. You’d have more chance finding one who doesn’t text while eating lunch.
Age is not the barrier – poor teaching methods are the barrier.
Traditional language study methods numb the mind.
Neither you nor a teenager can learn anything with a numb mind. You need an active, engaged, stimulated mind.
When you speak to learn instead of learning to speak, it brings your mind to life.
It gets your brain firing and increases your energy.
You realize the barriers are imaginary and you are capable of so much more than you have been doing.
As Sophia Loren said at the start of this email…
“When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.”
Throw any ideas of age barriers out of your mind now.

Thank you Marcus for all your wonderful emails. They definitely encourage and motive. I work a lot and just have to find a schedule so I can commit to at least an hour a day to your wonderful lessons.
Thanks again for your encouragement.
Linda
Marcus thank for all the lessons you sent me. I enjoy everyone. Before you got in touch with me, I didn’t know how to make sentences in spanish. Since I have been learning what you have sent me, I can make sentences now. Before, I only knew spanish words but I couldn’t put them into sentences to speak. Gracias por enseñarme.
Muy bien dicho! Muchisimas Gracias Marcus!
Marcus:
I am 67 years old and couldn’t agree more. I have always wanted to speak Spanish and recently decided that here is no time like NOW. I am just finishing Bola de Nieve 1, and will definitely be signing up for Bola 2.
Yo no lo he dominado, pero mis clientes latinos aprecian el esfuerzo!
Me encantan sus classes. Manejo a y del trabajo contigo todos los dias! (I hope I didn’t just embarrass my self!)
Hey Marcus! Thanks for all the work you do encouraging us with our Spanish. My wife and I are just about finished the first synergy course and we really love it. We plan to get the snowball Spanish next course.
You know, in the Bible Abraham was approaching his 90s when ‘he believed God’, and ‘it was accounted to him for righteousness’ (comparing Genesis chapters 15:6; 16:16).
Unbelief is a deadly condition.
Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!
Tommy
I’m a believer ..at age 87 I’m looking forward to ploughing into LSLC3…

I am 78 and have found that retention of anything to do with the left brain is a challenge, not impossible but different than when I was younger.
I am not giving up. I went to Peru in August and was frustrated more than once that I was at a loss to communicate with people there.
I need a way to retain what I read and learn…Thank you for all your encouragement for people like me, Because I am determined to forge ahead in 2015.
Pat
I totally agree, my goals have been set for 2015. Having completed Synergy Course I am now starting the first of my Bola Nieve, and loving it. So what, I am 74 years old, it is just a number!! My Grandaughters have motivated me to pick up my guitar again, and polish the keys on my piano, they are a great inspiration. My main craft is beading tapestries, but I have once again become hooked on crochet and knitting. I have a huge garden with 5 ponds, chickens, and an allotment where I grow all my fruit and vegetables, which in turn is converted into jams and chutneys. Yep, life begins at 70, 80. and hopefully 90years. Thanks Marcus, Feliz Navidad y un prospero nuevo ano. Gwendoline
Look up Eckhart Tolle on You Tube and you will understand. Please let me know your findings
I just started my day and was delighted to read your message. I am younger than most in this post, but feel older than I ever have. It goes along way to have inspiration during this journey of learning. I admire those of you that are 20-30 years older than I am conquering this new frontier of Spanish or any new language for that matter. I wish you all success and my batteries are charged up to take my next Spanish lesson on. Saludos and Feliz Navidad
I completely agree! I am 80 years old. I like your style in language training.
And it is also good for your brain!
The 9th of January I go to Vietnam 8 weeks, and for the first time. No group,
and alone 3weeks in the middle.
Ordered a room for the first week only.
Love travelling.
The last 2winters (Denmark) I went to Argentina and India, also for the first time,
And all alone. Of course you meet new friends, and travel companions.
This year one friend will join me 3weeks in the start, another for the last 2 weeks.
Do what you can, as long as you can, and your family is not worried for a good reason.
Again: Thank you Marcus.Inspiration is valuable, maybe nessasary.
Yours Kirsten
I am a young 69 and live in Peru. My wife and I are from the USA and have been in Peru 5 months and need to learn Spanish. We got your Spanish course at the beginning of December and it has already made a big difference in how we talk and understand. We use the phrases you have taught us and they work like magic. It is now fun to talk to the people. We laugh more and are excited to practice our Spanish everyday. Thank you for changing our lives.
Started Spanish last March. Love to learn, and I will give myself 6 yrs. to get decent with Spanish. Age 70, and finding Spanish is fun! One has to step up to the plate to hit the ball. You are ever too old to continue learning.
I will be 71 in January. However, this will not stop me from gardening like a lunatic, reading as many books as possible, playing the flute, playing with my grandsons, writing scripts and learning Spanish. You are too long dead not to make the most of life.
Age is just a number. But how old or young someone feels has a big influence on their health, thoughts, acts, state of mind etc. I always believe I’m younger, smarter, stronger))) Take care about your mindset!
Well I totally agree. I am 71 and I go to school 4 days a week to learn Spanish and I work on synergy Spanish 7 days a week. It keeps my mind active, makes me laugh and gives me a sense of achievement. guess where I really learn to speak? “Synergy Spanish”. You got it.
School keeps me in touch with young people , introduces me to quirky Spanish grammar and Synergy Spanish ties it all together so that I can talk right now to my family and tradespeople. I forgot to say that I also moved to Spain so it is even more important for me to be able to speak.
Saundra
I’m 76 years and am loving learning Spanish. Sometimes a weak voice tells me I’m too old but every time I learn a new word or phrase I reinforce my affirmation that I’ll be learning as long as I’m breathing.
Soooo very true !! I have no age barrier problem at 62 ..When I stop learning I’ll stop living.
It’s putting aside the time to improve my beloved Spanish is the hard one for me !!
I adore your work !
Andreas
Helena, wrotea beautiful sentence i feel the same
Age is a number. Old is an attitude. Me, I just stopped where it felt comfortable. 🙂
whatever age I am, I am me. the only thing that limits me are my thoughts. whatever I believe I can do , I do. think positive thoughts. and positive things will happen. welcome 2015 success to everyone.
