Two types of Spanish part 2
Which type Spanish should you use?
Many times formal Spanish is best because it shows respect. Yet other times informal Spanish is better as it’s friendlier and more casual.
Here’s my best advice… When in Rome do as the Romans do.
Or as they say in Spanish
Adonde fueres haz lo que vieres. – Wherever you go, do what you see. (Don’t worry about the weird looking verbs, this old saying is still used but the verb form is pretty much obsolete)
When in Madrid do as you see the madrileños doing… Or speak to them how you hear them speaking to you.
If people speak to you formally, do the same. And if they speak to you informally that’s your license to use informal Spanish. That’s my rule of thumb. It’s always worked very well for me and I still use it to this day…with these extras
- I speak to children informally
- I speak to people my age or younger informally in social situations
- I speak to older people formally.
So, it’s good to know both forms. You already know the formal Spanish very well from your Synergy Spanish course. Now it’s an easy step to speak informally. The conversations in the Synergy Spanish Informal Dialogs course are designed to make it easy for you to add informal Spanish to your repertoire.
Any questions or thoughts, let me know by leaving a comment.

Thank you Marcus for everything ! I have learned so much in such a short time by using your synergy spanish program. It’s hard to believe that I spent so much money and time on other programs, and I didn’t learn much with them. Thank you kindly for all the work that you do. You are greatly appreciated !

Good morning Marcus,
As with all the others, I thoroughly enjoyed the Synergy Spanish Informal Course.
Interestingly enough, as with many things here in Spain the old ways seem to be breaking down fast. One area is the use of formal Spanish. Here in Andalucia, at least. they seem to use informal Spanish most of the time. However, your suggestion that one should follow their lead and act accordingdly is excellent. I will definately do that in future.
I can’t wait for level 3 !. Is it nearing completion?
Kindest regards
Mike
